What can the government do about police brutality?

Police brutality has to be stopped as it impacts african americans individually by affecting their mental health and also increases crime rates and violence in the United states. Police brutality is still evident in many societies up to today. These brutalities have been encouraged by race and ethnicity. These police brutalities are mainly directed towards the minority or vulnerable groups such as the elderly the poor and the weak. It is true that the police officers use excessive force to apprehend suspect and also to protect themselves but they have been using this force excessively and this should be stopped so as to protect the citizens and also the police officers. Police should never take in hand the race of the suspect. The voice of suspects should also be heard by the police so the whole investigation can be fair for both parties.

Cops should be held accountable in a very transparent way

With the above steps, cops will avoid unnecessary uses of force. When a cop uses excessive force there needs to be more transparency in the after math as many cops are acquitted of their wrong doings. The most famous method is for cops to start wearing body cameras. Cameras are crucial as they can eliminate the doubt between the cops and citizens of what happened during a controversial incident. With body cams, suspects who are held accountable for crimes but didn't do them won't be wrongfully prisoned and the policemen would face the charges they deserve instead of being acquitted all the time.

Justice department founded that police were using protests behind Michael brown's case as a way to generate incentives. Police targeted black residents only.

On-the-job incentives for cops need to change

Incentives police departments impose on the officers should stop. The most common example for this problem is the shooting of Michael Brown. When the black lives matter protest took place after the shooting of Michael brown, the justice department was forced to investigate the Ferguson Police department as the cop who shot Michael worked there. They found out that the police were encouraged to ticket black residents with the goal of raising more revenue from fines and fees. But the bottom line is police need to be aware of how strict quotas and incentives can lead officers astray — and take steps to correct any of those unwanted side effects.

We need higher standards for police recruitment and a better pay

Who becomes a police likely needs to change by setting higher standards for police recruitment. There are currently no federal standards for cops. Lawmakers could establish laws so there could a bar for people to become cops. States could also individually increase their licensing requirements for police. For example in Florida, "barbers are required under state law to have more training than police: Barbers need to log 1,200 hours, while cops need 770. It’s just one state, but it exemplifies how poor the standards can be for police licensing across the US."
