Military-grade equipment should not be accessible as it encourages police brutality.

“I am a combat veteran, having served in combat in Vietnam. I have exchanged fire with the enemy in hostile environments. Those things happen in a war zone, but should not be happening in high schools, grade schools and kindergartens.”

Military-grade weapons are not required in an ordinary citizen’s life as it brings excessive violence to the conflict. These military weapons are used by cops in protests or crimes to stop the opposing party but it just results in more violence and thus more police brutality. The general public don’t need any military weapons which inflict major casualties. There are law enforcements and a military to protect the country in cases of emergencies. Law enforcements should be able to enforce more laws which restrict the access to military weapons to normal police officers.

After Obama implemented his laws for police brutality which stated the reduction of access to military-grade equipments and requirement of training and approval for the use of such equipments, there was a decline in the police brutality rates of the United states. This shows that the usage or access of military-grade equipments is one key part of police brutality which with Obama’s enforcement of laws has reduced. It helped reduce police brutality rates from 2015 to mid-2018. During 2015-2018 not only did police brutality rates reduce but so did the crime rates.  All this happened right after the enforcement of Obama’s laws, so around the same time police brutality rates went down. This justifies that police brutality rates have increased due to the access to military grade weapons. Another political reason for the cause of police brutality is the minimal consequences for police misconduct. In New Jersey, “99% of all complaints are left un-investigated” according to the Huffpost. The conviction rate for normal citizens is more than double the conviction rate for cops showing how corrupt the government is. The government’s failure to provide a remedy to the trouble caused by police explains the political connection to police brutality. The lack of the government being able to stop or even reduce police brutality shows how police brutality is increased by a political factor.

“The military gear played into the idea that police in the US are out of control — not just in how many people they kill and the racial disparities underlying the killings, but also in the equipment that law enforcement will use and the lengths that they’ll go through to suppress protesters and critics.”

"The Obama administration imposed restrictions on the federally provided equipment.”
